GTA 6 vs GTA 5: The Biggest Visual and Gameplay Differences
Our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 comparison covers graphics, Vice City, police AI, driving, combat, character switching, activities, wildlife, and interiors.

The difference between GTA 6 and GTA 5 is larger than a new map and sharper graphics. Rockstar's Extended Look shows a denser Vice City, more reactive police, physical inventory limits, deeper vehicle theft, expanded activities, and a two-character system built around Jason and Lucia working together.
GTA 5 remains the foundation, especially in driving, shooting, character switching, and open-world freedom. GTA 6 appears to rebuild those familiar systems around greater physical detail and longer consequences.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 graphics
GTA 5 was designed for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before being upgraded across later console generations. GTA 6 is built for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, allowing Rockstar to design around faster storage, stronger processors, and modern graphics hardware from the start.
The visual improvements are clear in several areas:
more varied character faces, bodies, hair, and clothing;
denser crowds with more simultaneous reactions;
richer interiors visible from streets and neighboring rooms;
advanced reflections across water, glass, vehicles, and wet roads;
more natural transitions between indoor and outdoor light;
larger quantities of physical clutter and destructible objects; and
more detailed weather, vegetation, shorelines, and wildlife.
Rockstar captured the Extended Look on a standard PS5. Our GTA 6 PS5 performance analysis explains why the footage is impressive and why 60 FPS remains unconfirmed.
Vice City vs Los Santos
GTA 5's Los Santos is a satirical version of Los Angeles and Southern California. GTA 6 returns to Vice City and expands outward across Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida.
The change produces a different kind of open world. Leonida combines beaches, dense nightlife districts, islands, wetlands, highways, small communities, marinas, and wildlife habitats. Water is more central to travel and recreation, with kayaking, fishing, scuba diving, jet skis, airboats, and larger boats all appearing in the footage.
Vice City also looks busier at pedestrian level. Sidewalks, clubs, stores, apartments, gyms, and waterfront spaces hold more people doing distinct activities instead of simply following traffic paths.
Two protagonists instead of three
GTA 5 tells its story through Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Players can switch among all three, and some missions use their different positions during a set piece.
GTA 6 focuses on Jason and Lucia. The smaller cast creates a more intimate structure because the protagonists are criminal partners whose personal relationship can develop through missions and free-roam choices.
Character switching also works differently when they are together. One can drive while the other shoots, use the phone, or handles another part of a robbery. Switching between them in the same space is nearly immediate, while longer aerial transitions remain available when they are apart.
Police and wanted levels
GTA 5 uses five wanted stars, police sight cones, roadblocks, helicopters, and increasingly aggressive units. GTA 6 restores a six-star scale and adds a more detailed information system.
Police may know specific details about faces, clothes, weapons, vehicles, and whether Jason and Lucia were seen together. Losing sight is no longer necessarily the end of the problem. Officers can search an area, witnesses may remember information, and a recognized getaway car can reconnect the player to the crime.
Stealing a parked car in GTA 5 usually requires smashing a window and waiting through a short ignition animation. GTA 6 offers several methods with different risks.
A Slim Jim can open some older vehicles quietly. Modern cars may require hotwiring or a key-cloning device. Breaking a window is faster but can trigger an alarm and attract witnesses. Particularly secure cars may be easier to take while the engine is running.
Vehicles also have more persistent functions. Personal cars can store weapons and stolen bags, while fuel or battery charge must be considered. Direction indicators, denser lanes, individual tire damage, towable vehicles, and more grounded handling make driving more involved.
Combat and inventory
GTA 5 allows each protagonist to carry a large arsenal inside the weapon wheel. GTA 6 applies visible limits. Jason and Lucia carry a smaller selection of sidearms, long guns, melee weapons, throwables, gadgets, and healing items. Additional weapons stay in a personal vehicle's trunk.
Long guns remain visible on the body. The choice to bring a rifle into public can affect how pedestrians react, making preparation and concealment part of the combat loop.
GTA 6 also introduces a Focus ability that slows time and highlights weak points on people and vehicles. Hit markers distinguish a hit, incapacitation, and a kill. Players can crouch freely, switch shoulders, vault more naturally, and target tires, engines, or fuel systems during a chase.
Robberies and money
GTA 5's largest heists are carefully authored story missions, while most open-world shop robberies are simple cash grabs. GTA 6 connects free-roam robberies more closely to progression.
Stores, jewelry targets, and larger jobs have different risk and payout levels. At certain points, Jason and Lucia may need to raise money before advancing the main story. Loot must reach a fence, and carried cash should be deposited because arrest or death can put it at risk.
Cameras, witnesses, disguises, getaway choices, and the behavior of a clerk can all change how a robbery unfolds.
Activities and character progression
GTA 5 contains sports, races, flight activities, diving, hunting, and a wide range of side content. GTA 6 builds on that variety with gyms, basketball, backyard fighting, dirt-bike races, car meets, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, social media, and more.
Food and exercise can change Jason and Lucia's bodies. Workouts improve attributes such as strength and stamina, while the phone tracks fitness progress. The safehouse supports eating, drinking, television, clothing changes, and other ordinary interactions.
GTA 6 appears more physically detailed and reactive, especially in police identification, vehicle theft, inventory, crowds, wildlife, and character routines. It remains an action-focused GTA game rather than a strict simulation.
