GTA 6 Stealth Robberies Explained: Lockpicks, Alarms and Security Cameras
Rockstar has revealed how stealth robberies work in GTA 6, including the Snap Gun lock-picking tool, security cameras, alarm systems and quiet store thefts.
By Goleonida Editorial•
GTA 6 will let players approach some store robberies quietly by using a lock-picking tool, destroying security cameras and disabling alarm systems before taking the cash. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson demonstrated the system during an exclusive Famitsu visit to Rockstar North.
The demonstration shows that robberies in Grand Theft Auto VI do not always have to begin with a weapon drawn or an alarm already sounding. Players can consider how they enter a location, what security systems are active and which tools they have available before committing the theft.
Nelson's example included approaching a store through the back, avoiding a forced entry that would trigger an alarm, using a tool called the Snap Gun to pick the lock, destroying surveillance cameras and disabling the security system.
After doing that, the player could quietly take money from the register and leave without anyone knowing what had happened inside the store.

GTA 6 lets players approach store robberies stealthily
Rockstar has confirmed that at least some store robberies in GTA 6 can be approached without immediately creating a loud confrontation.
During Famitsu's gameplay demonstration, Nelson showed a player approaching a shop from its rear entrance so they would not be noticed.
The door could simply be kicked open, but Nelson explained that doing so would trigger an alarm.
Instead, the player used a Snap Gun, which Famitsu describes as a special tool capable of picking locks, to enter the building more quietly.
This gives players a choice before the robbery has properly begun. A faster forced entry can create an immediate security problem, while carrying the correct equipment can provide a quieter alternative.
Rockstar has not said that every shop in Leonida will use this exact setup, so the demonstration should not be interpreted as confirmation that every store has a rear entrance, lockable door or identical security system.
What is the Snap Gun in GTA 6?
The Snap Gun is a lock-picking tool that can be used during certain crimes in GTA 6.
Nelson demonstrated the device while entering the locked rear door of a store. Instead of kicking the door open and activating the alarm, the player used the Snap Gun to pick the lock and enter quietly.
This is another example of equipment affecting how players can approach criminal activities in GTA 6.
Rockstar has not yet detailed exactly how players obtain the Snap Gun, how many types of locks it can open or whether other lock-picking tools will be available.
Security cameras can be destroyed during robberies
GTA 6 allows players to destroy security cameras inside the demonstrated store.
After gaining access through the rear entrance, the player destroyed the surveillance cameras.
Nelson explained that doing this prevents the player from being seen by those cameras.
Combined with the quieter entry method, this means surveillance is something players can account for instead of treating it as background decoration.
Rockstar has not yet explained whether recorded camera footage can later be used by police, how long cameras retain information or whether every security camera in the open world can be destroyed. Those details remain unconfirmed.
Players can disable a store's security system
The demonstrated GTA 6 robbery also allowed the store's security system to be disabled.
According to Nelson, disabling the system prevents the alarm from going off.
Once the player had entered quietly, destroyed the cameras and neutralized the security system, they could take cash from the register without immediately exposing the robbery.
That combination is important because the different systems work together. Quietly opening the door would be less useful if an active alarm immediately reported the theft, while disabling security would not necessarily help if someone had already seen the player entering with a weapon.
The demonstration therefore shows how preparation can influence the outcome of a robbery.
Can you rob a store without alerting police in GTA 6?
The Famitsu demonstration shows that a store robbery can be completed without anyone knowing what happened, provided the player avoids detection and disables the relevant security systems.
Nelson demonstrated the player entering quietly, destroying cameras, disabling the security system, stealing money from the register and leaving.
He explained that if the player simply leaves after doing this, nobody has to know what happened there.
That does not mean every robbery in GTA 6 can always be completed without police involvement. Witnesses, alarms, player behavior and the location itself can change the situation.
Elsewhere in the same interview, Nelson explained that a person who sees the player approaching a store with a gun may call the police. Officers could then already be waiting outside when the robbery is finished.
This makes avoiding detection before entering the building potentially just as important as handling the security systems inside.
Witnesses can report suspicious behavior
A quiet robbery can fail before the player even enters the store if someone notices suspicious behavior.
Nelson gave the example of approaching a shop while visibly carrying a gun.
If a nearby pedestrian sees what is happening, they may report the player to police. By the time the robbery is complete, officers can already be waiting outside.
This connects store robberies directly with GTA 6's broader witness and Wanted systems.
The player's actions around a crime scene matter, not just what happens after the theft begins.

GTA 6 robberies go beyond convenience stores
Stores are not the only locations players can rob in GTA 6.
Nelson said players can identify gang hideouts and infiltrate them to steal cash and drugs. Information on the map can indicate how much money and drugs are stored at these locations, while stolen drugs can be taken to a fence.
He also confirmed that players can rob jewelry stores and smaller banks, either alone or with both protagonists involved.
Those locations can present greater challenges.
Nelson specifically said that businesses such as jewelry stores have stronger security and that the police response can be more difficult, making preparation and a quick escape important.
This suggests that GTA 6 will offer robbery opportunities with different levels of risk and preparation rather than treating every target in exactly the same way.
Jason and Lucia can commit robberies together
Some robberies can be completed alone or with Jason and Lucia working together.
Nelson confirmed that a player can rob a store alone or invite Lucia to join. Other robbery activities can also involve both protagonists.
When escaping together, the characters can divide responsibilities.
For example, one protagonist can drive while the other handles shooting during a police pursuit.
That gives GTA 6's two-protagonist structure a practical role outside traditional story missions. Jason and Lucia are not limited to appearing together only when a scripted mission requires it.
Suppressive fire provides another escape option
GTA 6 also introduces suppressive fire as a way to create an opportunity to escape without directly shooting someone.
Nelson described the mechanic immediately before demonstrating the stealth store robbery.
Instead of firing directly at police officers or civilians, the player can intentionally shoot near them. The gunfire can frighten or confuse them and give the player time to escape.
Rockstar designed the mechanic to provide another option in situations where players do not want to kill everyone standing between them and an escape route.
Players can still choose to fight, but Nelson explained that unnecessary violence can affect GTA 6's Criminal Profile system.
This means a robbery that goes wrong does not automatically require the player to respond with lethal force.
Why GTA 6's stealth robberies matter
The important change is not simply that GTA 6 contains stores that can be robbed.
Grand Theft Auto has allowed players to commit robberies before.
What is different in Rockstar's demonstration is the number of systems surrounding the crime.
The player can:
Consider how they approach the building.
Avoid displaying a weapon where witnesses can see it.
Choose between forcing a door and picking its lock.
Destroy surveillance cameras.
Disable the security system.
Steal the money.
Leave before the crime is discovered.
Each step can potentially affect what happens next.
A player who kicks through the door may trigger an alarm. Someone carrying a visible gun may be reported by a pedestrian. A player who prepares properly can instead attempt to complete the theft quietly.
That gives GTA 6 robberies more room for planning while preserving the possibility that a small mistake turns the situation into a police chase.
GTA 6 stealth robberies FAQ
Can you rob stores stealthily in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar demonstrated a GTA 6 store robbery where the player approaches through the rear entrance, picks the lock, destroys security cameras and disables the security system before stealing cash.
This confirms that at least some robberies support a stealthier approach.

That can result in officers waiting outside by the time the player finishes the robbery.
Can Jason and Lucia rob stores together?
Yes. Nelson said a player can rob a store alone or invite Lucia to join.
Other robbery activities, including jewelry stores and smaller banks, can also involve the protagonists working together.
Can you rob banks in GTA 6?
Yes. Nelson confirmed that smaller banks can be robbed, either alone or with both protagonists involved.
Rockstar has not yet revealed every bank that can be targeted or the exact mechanics for each robbery.
GTA 6 is making crime more systemic
Rockstar's store demonstration provides one of the clearest examples yet of how GTA 6 is expanding familiar Grand Theft Auto activities.
Instead of treating a robbery as a single interaction followed automatically by a Wanted level, GTA 6 can account for the player's approach, witnesses, entry method, cameras, security system and escape.
The result is a criminal activity where preparation can matter before the first dollar is taken.
Rockstar has not revealed how frequently these systems will appear across Leonida, and the final game will determine how much freedom players have at every robbery location.
What Rockstar has confirmed is already significant: in GTA 6, at least some store robberies can be planned and completed quietly enough that the player leaves before anyone knows a crime occurred.
