GTA 6 Character Switching Explained: When You Can Switch Jason and Lucia
Rockstar explains when GTA 6 players can switch between Jason and Lucia, including free switching, automatic swaps and story sections that lock control to one protagonist.
By Goleonida Editorial•
GTA 6 will let players switch between Jason and Lucia, but Rockstar has confirmed that character switching will not always be available. Some missions allow players to swap freely, some automatically change the controlled protagonist, and other story sections temporarily lock players to a specific character.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained the rules during an interview with Famitsu.
The system builds on GTA 5's multiple-protagonist design while giving Rockstar more control over which character's perspective the player experiences during important story moments.
GTA 6 character switching at a glance
Situation
How switching works
Open world
Players can generally switch between Jason and Lucia.
Some missions
Players are free to switch between the protagonists.
Story-specific sections
Switching can be temporarily disabled.
Scripted moments
The game can automatically transfer control between Jason and Lucia.
Two-character action
One character can perform one role while the player controls the other.
Can you switch between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar has confirmed character switching between GTA 6's two protagonists.
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos can both be controlled, and players can move between them during the game.
The exact availability depends on what is happening in the story.
Nelson said Rockstar tries to keep switching available where appropriate, but certain scenes are designed around one protagonist's perspective.
Some missions let you switch freely
Certain GTA 6 missions allow the player to alternate between Jason and Lucia.
Nelson referenced a mission shown during Rockstar's gameplay presentation where the protagonists come under attack.
During that sequence, players can alternate between controlling Jason and Lucia.
This can create situations where both protagonists are actively participating in the same encounter while the player chooses which role to control.
Some story sections lock you to one character
Character switching can be restricted when Rockstar wants a scene to be experienced from a specific protagonist's perspective.
Nelson compared the approach with GTA 5.
The restriction is tied to story progression and mission design rather than being a permanent limitation.
That means players should not assume Jason and Lucia can always be swapped at any second.
If a narrative sequence depends on Jason or Lucia taking a particular role, Rockstar can temporarily keep the player with that character.
GTA 6 can switch characters automatically
Some missions can transfer control without requiring the player to manually select the other protagonist.
Nelson described a bank robbery sequence that demonstrates this.
Jason initially fires at pursuing police while Lucia drives.
During the mission, control changes and the player begins driving as Lucia while Jason and Raul fire at police from the vehicle.
The switch changes the player's responsibility without stopping the action.
Jason and Lucia can have different roles during the same mission
The two-protagonist system allows missions to divide tasks between Jason and Lucia.
One character can drive while the other shoots.
Another mission might place the characters in different locations or give each protagonist a different objective.
Rockstar can then either let the player choose who to control or determine the switch automatically depending on the scene.
This creates a system that is flexible rather than following one rule for every mission.
How GTA 6 switching compares with GTA 5
GTA 5 introduced three protagonists who could often be switched during free roam and selected missions.
GTA 6 reduces that number to two main protagonists.
Rockstar has explained that focusing on Jason and Lucia allows the story to spend more time developing both characters and their relationship.
Character switching remains part of the experience, but story context determines when complete freedom makes sense.

Instead, GTA 6 can change the rules depending on the scene.

That gives Rockstar a way to preserve player freedom during open-world gameplay while still controlling perspective when a particular story sequence depends on it.
