GTA 6 Map Size: Leonida Is Three Times the Size of RDR2
Rockstar has provided its clearest GTA 6 map comparison yet. Here is how Leonida reportedly compares with RDR2 and GTA 5, and what remains unknown.
By Goleonida Editorial•
GTA 6's Leonida map is approximately three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, according to information Rockstar shared during a New York Times studio visit. Separate reporting from the same preview cycle says Vice City itself is about twice the size of Los Santos.
Those are the clearest official comparisons yet, but they are not exact measurements. Rockstar has not published Leonida's area in square miles or square kilometers, revealed the complete map boundary, or explained whether water is included in the comparison.
How big is the GTA 6 map?
The most reliable current answer is that the complete state of Leonida is roughly three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. That means the comparison covers more than Vice City: it includes the islands, wetlands, industrial zones, towns and highlands surrounding the main urban area.
Preview coverage has also described Vice City as approximately twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos. These comparisons were reported following sanctioned access to Rockstar rather than calculated from fan maps, leaked coordinates or trailer perspective.
Rockstar has not defined where either city boundary ends
Leonida vs. GTA 5's full map
Larger, but no official numerical ratio published
Fan estimates should not be treated as measurements
The three-times-RDR2 comparison was reported by outlets including GamesRadar following The New York Times' access to Rockstar. Rockstar's official Leonida guide confirms the major named regions but does not display a complete world map or numerical dimensions.
GTA 6 is bigger than one city
Rockstar has presented Leonida as a state rather than a city map with a small rural border. Official material identifies six major regions:
Vice City, the dense coastal metropolis at the center of the story;
Leonida Keys, an island chain connected by long roads and bridges;
Grassrivers, a wetland region crossed by waterways and wildlife;
Port Gellhorn, a faded coastal community with motels, strip malls and industry;
Ambrosia, an inland area shaped by heavy industry and local biker culture; and
Mount Kalaga, a northern region of forests, rivers and elevated terrain.
These are broad destinations rather than a complete list of districts, towns or interiors. The Extended Look also shows airports, marinas, ports, beaches, highways, neighborhoods, industrial sites and smaller communities that may sit within those six regions.
Why a three-times-larger map may not feel three times longer
Map area and travel time are not the same measurement. Red Dead Redemption 2 is mostly crossed on horseback, while GTA 6 includes cars, motorcycles, boats, helicopters and planes. A larger landscape can therefore be traversed more quickly.
Water may also account for a significant part of Leonida. The state contains bays, rivers, wetlands, beaches and island chains. Those spaces are playable and support boats, airboats, kayaking, fishing, scuba diving and wildlife, but they do not create the same street density as central Vice City.
The shape of the map matters as much as its area. Long keys and coastal roads can produce extended journeys without requiring the same amount of land as a solid square. Bridges, waterways and limited crossings can also change how far apart two places feel.
Density matters more than raw map area
The Extended Look suggests that Rockstar is using the additional space for contrast, not simply distance. Vice City has crowds, nightlife, traffic and layered interiors. The Leonida Keys create long coastal routes. Grassrivers supports water travel and wildlife, while Mount Kalaga introduces terrain unlike the flat southern part of the state.
That variety can make the world feel larger because each region has a different visual identity and rhythm. It also gives missions more room to change scale: a robbery can begin in a crowded urban interior, move onto a highway and finish at a remote hideout without leaving the same continuous state.
Rockstar has not announced how many buildings can be entered. The Extended Look shows seamless movement through several detailed interiors, but it does not prove that every visible building is accessible. Claims that GTA 6 has a specific percentage of enterable buildings remain unconfirmed.
Can fan maps show GTA 6's real size?
Community mapping projects can estimate road layouts and landmark positions from trailers and screenshots, but they cannot yet reproduce the final map at a verified scale. Camera lenses, edited sequences, background geometry and changes made during development can all distort the result.
Fan maps are useful visual theories. They should not be used to calculate an official square-mile figure until Rockstar releases a full map, a strategy guide provides scale, or the finished game can be measured directly.
The same caution applies to leaked coordinates. Even authentic development data can come from an incomplete build, use a different origin point or include unloaded space outside the playable boundary.
What Rockstar still has not revealed about the map
Several important map questions remain unanswered:
the exact land and water area;
the complete outer boundary;
the number and names of all towns and districts;
how much of Vice City is enterable;
whether the map changes during the story;
whether islands or regions unlock gradually;
the number of safehouses and purchasable properties; and
whether GTA Online will use the entire single-player map at launch.
Until Rockstar publishes the full map, the best-supported conclusion is simple: Leonida is designed as Rockstar's largest and most geographically varied modern open world, but its precise dimensions remain undisclosed.
GTA 6 map size FAQ

Yes, according to Rockstar information reported after The New York Times' studio visit. The comparison describes Leonida as roughly three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?
Preview reporting says Vice City is approximately twice the size of Los Santos. Rockstar has not published city boundary maps showing exactly how that comparison was calculated.
How many square miles is the GTA 6 map?
